Dear Mr. President:
I know you are a busy man, so let me get right to the point. We manufacture big bore lever action hunting rifles just outside of Cody, Wyoming. In the last few years, the actions and policies of your predecessor have stymied growth for many small businesses in our industry. Two of these actions are particularly onerous to my company and others like ours.
The first is called Operation Chokepoint. This is a Department of Justice initiative directed at the banking industry through the FDIC. It, in short, is aimed at eliminating bank funding for new and growing companies in the firearms industry. Banks, including some we have dealt with for years, are interested in loaning us capital until they find out we are a firearms manufacturer. Once they learn that fact, doors close and discussions end.
The second is the US Department of State (DOS), Directorate of Defense Trade Controls registration. This registration is ostensibly to control the exportation of defense articles (firearms in this case) and is required for manufacturers, exporters and brokers of defense articles. As stated on the DOS website, under the “Who Must Register” page, “Registration is primarily a means to provide the U.S. Government with necessary information on who is involved in certain manufacturing, exporting and brokering activities”. The annual fee for this registration is required by regulation starts at $2,250 and goes much higher under many circumstances. This is an outrageous fee information gathering. If this is what it really costs the DOS to gather information, I would suggest that the Department is extremely bloated and overpaid.
Recently, your predecessor tried to extend this registration regulation to tens of thousands of small gunsmithing shops across America. This has caused many of these small businesses to close their doors.
I know you have said that you will take action against government over-regulation. This is one area that deserves your special attention. Please do what you can, as soon as you can, to end these particular items.
Allow me to congratulate you on your victory and your inauguration. We would be happy to help in your efforts to Make America Great Again in any way we can. Should you and your family ever wander out to Wyoming, allow us the privilege of extending you some Western hospitality.
Best of luck in all your endeavors, Sincerely,
